BARKLY TEAM ADVENTURE 2013
Thank you for your interest in our Enduro World Barkly Team Challenge, aka “The Barkly Bash”!
This adventure is aimed at adventurous and fun loving enduro riders, ready and willing to take on a challenge in the rugged, remote, gruelling and awesomely beautiful mountains of the Southern Drakensberg. This year we are offering 3 levels – Red (for seasoned and fit proficient rock riders); Green (for seasoned and proficient rock riders who want a little less of the red); and Novice (for newer riders who want to enjoy the stunning scenery and have fun on mainly jeep tracks).
Accommodation is camping in a lovely pine forest in a scenic mountain setting. Power points and lights are provided in the camping area. Decent ablution/ shower facilities and a dining hall and marquee are available.
YOUR TEAM WILL NEED TO CONSIST OF:
- 3 to 6 riders with a good sense of humour on good reliable off-road bikes.
- At least two of the riders in each team should have and be able to use a GPS competently.
This is a joint venture between Enduro World Magazine and two Agricultural Associations who have given permission to ride over their land. A GPS track will be downloaded on every team’s GPS’s at the start of the challenge.
The Challenge will be based at and begin from the Clifford Club (S31 04.916 E27 26.901) near the town of Barkly East on Thursday 7th February 2013 at 12h00. Each team will supply its own fuel, spares, tents, sleeping bags etc. Brunches and suppers will be provided by the very friendly local farmers (who are all very much a part of this event). Teams should bring their own snacks in bumbags for snacks on the trail.
THURSDAY 7 FEBRUARY 2013
Welcome & Registration - 12h00 Briefing - 13h00 Ride Start - 14h00
Whilst teams set up their camps in the lovely pine forest, we will download the tracks to your GPS’s. After a short briefing teams can set off on the first ride and complete the challenges for the day.
Distance for the day +- 40km (2.5 to 4 hours).
FRIDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2013
Every team starts out on the day’s ride after breakfast at whatever time they like … we recommend you start at 06h00! The ride will include some very tough passes and challenges where you will need to work together as a team to “survive”. Distance for the day approximately 120km (Green and Novice routes are shorter). Provision will be made for you to refuel en-route and there will be a brunch stop ... where teams will have to “earn” their brunch by completing certain challenges!
A tough day of riding is ahead for the next day, so an early night’s rest is recommended.
SATURDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2013
Once again an early start is recommended. Passes like “Who’s your Daddy”, “Die Muurtjies” and “Heartbreak Hill” will test your mettle. Besides the technical and physical difficulty there will be other challenges requiring team-work and improvisation! The day total will be in the region of 140km (Green and Novice routes are shorter). Provision will be made for you to refuel en-route and earn brunch again. There will be escape options for those who require it.
Hot showers, prize giving, great food and lots of laughs will follow.
SUNDAY 10 FEBRUARY 2013
After a leisurely breakfast teams will depart and head for home. We guarantee you will feel like you are leaving a part of your soul in this incredibly beautiful place, with the warm and special people of Barkly who will make your weekend so memorable!
The whole event runs over private land. Please respect the privilege we have to ride in this awesome area. Don’t litter! While passing through or past livestock, please ride slowly. Public roads are not closed for this event. Obey traffic laws and don’t speed while travelling on public roads. Keep left!! As far as possible all gates will be opened or at least manned. If for some reason or other you get to a gate that is closed, please close it again after you’ve passed through. The golden rule is “Close what is found closed and leave open what is found open”. Each team will receive a 2 way radio and charger. This is expensive equipment, please look after it. Each team must charge the radio overnight. Any radio’s lost or damaged must be replaced by the respective teams. Most parts of the route have cell phone coverage. Carry your cell phone with you.
Strict cut-off times will be enforced along the route. If for any reason you are time-barred, you will be able to shortcut on the escape route and possibly rejoin the route again later.
The red route is best suited to groups of riders who have experience in mountain riding and who are proficient rock/ mountain riders. Our last three Barkly Bashes were very tough due to heavy and persistent rains … but this just added to the fun and the vast majority of the participants have come back for more. That’s why this event has become increasingly popular each year!
The Green route is not easy but there is less of the red stuff in it. All the routes are likely to be the best riding you will ever do - It is a real privilege to ride in this area!
The terrain is very rugged and riders must be prepared to make running repairs on bikes, make plans to cross rivers and possibly fences, and perhaps even evacuate an injured rider. Each team must have a camera with them and submit at least 10 photo’s per team per day!
THIS IS NOT A RACE! NO WINNERS, ONLY SURVIVORS!
